Misfit K9 Training Center became a reality after many years of wishful thinking. I was so tired of seeing the old military style of dog training. I wanted to show people that there was an alternative that worked just as well and usually better.
We have been in operation for 14 years, though I have been training dogs
for the last 39 years. I started training dogs in high school. Was an assistant leader in 4-H in the Dog Program. Ran a dog
grooming shop and showed my dogs and dogs owned by others. Always loved the obedience
side more than the conformation side of dog showing. I like a dog that can use
its brain. I have shown and titled every one of my many dogs thru the years.
Most of my dogs are rescue, but that does not mean they are too old to learn. Every dog has the potential to continue learning.
The adage "You cant teach an old dog new tricks" is not true. I have proved
it to be wrong.
I use mainly positive reinforcement techniques to persuade the dog to do as
I want happily, because it is fun. The overall attitude of my dogs are that they
are happy and having fun doing whatever I ask. It makes for a happier household
and a happier, more loving dog. They never lose trust in you. You become their most prized possession.
My greatest joy is watching the dogs at graduation, acting like Canine Good
Citizens. Compared to the first night they walked into the building, dragging their owners, it is a transformation that brings
joy to all involved.
I have been certified by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers for 11 years
now and attend training seminars annually to keep abreast on the new ideas and techniques, and breaking news.
As time goes on, I, myself, have come to depend on an Assistance Dog to help
me on my bad days. I have severe arthritis. Mickey, my Airedale, picks up things I drop, and braces to help
me stand. He is not needed every day but when I do need the help, he is always there and willing. He is my guardian
angel.
